Wildfire map
NASA FIRMS VIIRS detections from the last 24 hours (firehours sets how many), plus what Meteosat Third Generation saw burning in the last hour over Europe, Africa and the Atlantic, every 10 minutes, drawn to scale. GDACS's wildfires carry their burned area.
In the US, NIFC's WFIGS perimeters draw the edge of each fire not yet declared out, and NOAA's Hazard Mapping System smoke plumes (light, medium, heavy) over North America lie as a haze on the sunlit ground.
How to read it
Each red-orange point is a fire VIIRS detected in the last 24 hours, drawn at the size of the ground it covers but never smaller than a screen pixel, so at globe zoom a fire is one pixel; weak ones are hidden until you zoom in. Over Europe, Africa and the Atlantic, Meteosat Third Generation’s detections of the last hour are added, a little larger, since a geostationary pixel covers more ground. Fires are red-orange so they never read as city lights.
US perimeters are red-orange where mapped in the last 3 days and not contained, orange while still open, a dim burn-scar brown once contained, and dashed amber for prescribed burns; the biggest recent ones are labeled with their area and containment. Smoke is a gray-brown haze on the sunlit ground, from NOAA analysts’ plumes over North America. GDACS wildfires carry an impact meter and, once large, a dashed circle of their burned area.
Questions
How current is the fire map?
VIIRS passes over each place a few times a day; its detections are gathered hourly and re-read every 10 minutes. MTG sees its region every 10 minutes. Perimeters are as crews and infrared flights last mapped them.
Is every dot a wildfire?
No, a hot spot: farm and savanna burning, gas flares, lava and industrial heat show too, and in Africa’s dry season most points are crop and grass fires. Low-confidence detections are dropped. Click a perimeter for its area, containment, cause and when it was mapped.
Can I change the time window?
firehours sets how many hours of detections show, from 1 to 24 (this view uses 24; the app’s default is 12). F turns fires off and on, and Y the smoke.
