Aerosols
VIIRS's Deep Blue aerosol optical depth (NOAA-20, NOAA-21, Suomi NPP), the newest two days, over land and sea under clear sky: faint where the air is clean, orange at 0.5, red past 1.
Or the OMPS UV aerosol index (aerosol=index, Suomi NPP): smoke and dust seen through and over cloud, today's and yesterday's. The readout gives how much is thick and where it's thickest.
How to read it
Aerosol optical depth is how much of the sunlight the haze stops on its way down: faint where the air is clean, orange at 0.5, red past 1, where only about a third of the direct sunlight gets through. Deep Blue works over bright deserts too, which is why Saharan dust shows over land as well as over the Atlantic. It’s measured only under clear sky, so cloud leaves gaps, and the newest two days are combined to fill them.
The UV aerosol index (aerosol=index, Shift+Y’s second step) sees smoke and dust that absorb sunlight, above and through cloud, but not haze near the ground or sea salt; it says how much, not exactly how thick. The readout gives how much is thick and where it’s thickest.
Questions
Is this an air quality map?
Not directly. Optical depth is the whole column of air, including plumes several kilometers up, while air quality is what you breathe at the ground: a thick plume aloft can leave the ground clear. Search a place (/) and its card gives the US AQI when it’s worse than moderate.
Where does the dust come from?
Mostly the Sahara and the deserts of the Middle East and Asia; in summer Saharan dust crosses the Atlantic to the Caribbean. The smoke comes from fire seasons, which the wildfire map shows at their source.
